Funeral Tomorrow of J. O. Chapin in Medford

MEDFORD. Funeral services for Joseph O. Chapin, 85, former treasurer of the Mystic Congregational Church and the Home for the Aged Grand Army veteran and trustee of the Medford Savings Bank for more than 25 years, will be held at 2:30 tomorrow at the family residence, 155 Forest st.

Mr. Chapin was a native of Newport, N. H. and lived here 57 years. He was educated at Kimball Union Academy at Meriden N. H. and was in business at Boston before the Civil War. He enlisted in the 9th Massachusetts Battery. He was injured just before the battle of Gettysburg by being thrown from his artillery horse and was invalided home after the battle. He reenlisted at Fort Independence as a hospital stewart and was discharged at the close of the Civil War after three years of service. He was an active member and chaplain for many years of S. C. Lawrence Post 66, G. A. R.

After the war Mr Chapin was married at Windsor Vt. to Miss Julia A. Fay, who survives him. He was in the leather business in Boston until the Boston fire of 1872 and was connected with the National Bank of North America until its liquidation. For more than 25 years he has been identified with the Medford Savings Bank as a trustee and chairman of the auditing committee. He was active in the Royal Arcanum and held many offices in the Medford Council.

He is survived by his wife, a daughter, Miss Susan F. Chapin, chief clerk of the Board of Assessors; a son, George F. Chapin of Mt Vernon, N. Y. and a brother Rev George F. Chapin of Princeville, Ill.

J. A. Chapin Funeral in Medford Center - Grand Army Ritual for Post Chaplain

MEDFORD. Dec 31 -- Funeral services for Joseph A. Chapin, 85, Grand Army veteran and chaplain of Samuel C. Lawrence Post 66, G. A. R., ex-treasurer and deacon of the Mystic Congregational Church and for 25 years a trustee and chariman of the auditing committee of the Medford Savings Bank, took place this afternoon at the family residence, 155 Forest st, Medford Center.

Rev Thomas C. Richards, pastor of the Mystic Congregational Church, assisted by Rev George M. Butler, pastor of the Congregational Church of Dedham and ex-pastor of the Mystic church, officiated at the services.

A Grand Army ritual service was conducted by Mr Chapin's comrades in Lawrence Post. Commander Charles O. Burbank had charge of the service, assisted by Past Commander Winslow Joyce as chaplain, a position held for many years by Mr Chapin.

Delegations of the trustees and officers of the Medford Savings Bank, officers of the Mystic Congregational Church Society and of Lawrence Post were among those present at the services. The floral tributes included pieces from the bank corporation, the Mystic Congregational Church Society and organizations of the church, Medford Home for the Aged Corporation of which Mr Chapin was formerly treasurer and from the Medford city office building.

Honorary bearers were Ex-Alderman Herman L. Buss and Charles L. Buss, treasurer of the Medford Savings Bank; Commander Charles O. Burbank of S. C. Lawrence Post 66, G. A. R. and William N. Homer. Active bearers were these nephews: Joseph B. Kimball of Andover, Daniel W. Boynton, Oliver F. Kidder and Lloyd W. Miller. Interment was in Oak Grove Cemetery.
